Part 2 of a short documentary PSA on damage to reef fish and the reef environment caused by the use of fish traps.

part 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NoGB5PCIfg

This video shows the damage and mortal injuries to non-targeted, undersized and protected species when fish traps are used in the harvest of food fish. This video also shows how abandoned ghost traps continue to kill targeted and non-targeted species without any harvest for as long as they remain intact in the ocean.

The footage was originally shot in 1992 for the fight to ban the gear in Florida and the surrounding federal waters, now some fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico want permission to use this gear again by overturning the 2007 ban on fish traps in the Gulf of Mexico. We have remastered the original footage to raise awareness for the fight to keep this gear banned.

Please watch this video and write to the Gulf Council to let them know that allowing Fish Traps will have dire consequences on gulf fish stocks.

  • Your comments condemning us for how and what we filmed show clearly that you were not on the inside of this battle which raged for a number of years. At fishery meetings the trappers were lying their asses off about virtually every aspect of fish trapping. They even made up the world's most edited piece of crap film that showed that "fish are not harmed by being rapidly dragged to the surface". We had to expose them for what they were - liars and resource rapers.

  • We filmed two traps because it increased the variety of trapped species and showed that none are immune. You say that "we all know what traps do". No one seemed to know at the time we filmed it and we were all alone and having our lives threatened by a room full of angry trappers. We felt sick having to watch the clips over and over as we put the film together but it was necessary. We got fish traps banned and you condemning us for it is unjustified.

  • Yesterday, February 3, 2010 the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council told ythe potential fish trappers to go to Hell and said they will NOT even discuss the possibility of allowing fish traps back in the Gulf of Mexico. Reality wins out over trapper propaganda. Trappers: Get it through your heads that fish traps are a bad gear type that should be given the same consideration as dynamite fishing. Do us all a favor and don't bring it up again.

  • @DanielSnedden exactly

  • Why not release the fish from the trap where you found it?

  • Why didn't you release the fish.

  • and thats real retarded....the fish that are alive get 2 fingers in theyre eye for their dying moments....

  • why did they need to film another one?? 1 was disturbing to watch, but filming it twice is retarded. we know the effects now, this is just cruel on the campaigners behalf now...

  • Fish traps need to be banned!
