  • This is not a test that could only be done in space. The robot is going through a range of movements that could just as easily and far more cheaply be conducted on Earth. If this video proves anything it's that space exploration has become a stale PR exercise.

  • @hengistmcstone You are absolutely right that these movements could be done on earth, in fact these movements are regularly done on the R2 unit on Earth. However, the goal of these movements is to evaluate the algorithms used and then determine of they need to be tweaked for zero gravity. These are the first steps needed to build to more complicated movements. All of these new movements could also be done on earth, but that wouldn't make R2 much of an astronauts assistant would it?
