what are the custom machined reliefs?

@Tikool7 it's supposed to relieve the crankcase pressure between cylinders, I have my doubts. Someone on the zrxoa board came up with it I think so all the sheep over there jumped on the wagon and when they do a 1224 build they have this done also.

It's a major P.I.A. to install the rings compared to a full cylinder

Sheep? It was dyno proven by Arlie Martin a passed member who researched and performed the first version and proved the gains. It was worth almost 5 HP on his motor using the same dyno and tune setup on a 1224 ZZR cam ZRX.

Thanks a lot for the info , I had the head done and Muzzy cams on my zrx but the reliefs werent done and I was wondering if this was worth doing it next time I open it , thanks to you I wont be a sheep...

Nice work! Plan on going 1224 on my ZRX one day but am satisfied with stock bore, hi-comp pistons and ZZR cams for now. See my profile for my dyno pull. Good luck and post up a video when you get her running.
