The Police were an English rock trio, from London, England, formed originally in 1977. The trio consisted of Gordon Sumner, widely known by his stage name of Sting (lead vocals, bass guitar), Andy Summers (guitar, vocals) and Stewart Copeland (drums, vocals, percussion). The band became globally popular in the late 1970s and are generally regarded as one of the first New Wave groups to achieve mainstream success, playing a style of rock that was influenced by jazz, punk and reggae music. Their 1983 album, Synchronicity, was number one in the UK and the US and sold over 8,000,000 copies in the US. The band broke up in 1984, but reunited in early 2007 for a one-off world tour lasting until August 2008, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their hit single "Roxanne" and also, to a lesser extent, that of their formation as a group. The Police have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, and became the world's highest-earning musicians in 2008, thanks to their reunion tour.

I don't want to spend the rest of my life
Looking at the barrel of an Armalite
I don't want to spend the rest of my days
Keeping out of trouble like the soldiers say
I don't want to spend my time in hell
Looking at the walls of a prison cell
I don't ever want to play the part
Of a statistic on a goverment chart

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

It's dark all day, and it glows all night
Factory smoke and acetylene light
I face the day with me head caved in
Looking like something that the cat brought in

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
That gives us hope when the whole day's done

And they're only going to change this place by
Killing everybody in the human race
And they would kill me for a cigarette
But I don't even wanna die just yet

There has to be an invisible sun
It gives its heat to everyone
There has to be an invisible sun
It gives us hope when the whole day's done

  • The moment you start trying to define a band by genre you automatically sacrifice all the richness of their work that sits outside the box you've chosen to trap them in. Such attempts show a lack of grace, spiritual generosity and a streak of ugly pedantry. Let's just agree they made Music, and for many of us it's rewarding music to listen to. That's all that really matters, all else is pretention and abstraction.

  • Brilliant song! One of the darker songs from that period and genre

  • @man975dog or certainly conflist of some description

  • @man975dog Its about the British Army isn't it?

  • @Dave33Grimsby It's the most beautiful song and piece of music I ever heard about the sun.

  • killer tune ,off the ghost in the machine my all time fav police lp ....!!!!!

  • Back when I knew nothing of Northern Ireland. I was looking for the official video. Its stark imagery of N.I. is pretty jarring if you are under the impression that all of the UK looks like what most Americans think of, ie, London.

  • @Baritone45 The Police were pretty punkish when they first started, and some Devo songs are pretty hard rockin' affairs! And there's TONS of more mainstream bands than Talking Heads (have you listened to Remain in Light lately?).

  • This is top quality tune

  • I was born in 1988. I remember tripping very hard by myself in the 8th grade. I was on the balcony looking at the street lights. I repeated this song for hours.

  • @Shyla07NY1

Poor ole' Belfast! I did a book report on the place back in the day.

Its another casualty of the end of the Cold War. Suddenly, in the nineties, if one wanted to watch lily-white people butcher each other, there was a plethora of choices. The old dump just couldn't compete.

  • there's always 2 or 3 dislikes on every song posted by this person, its like they're out to get RakyMaky, not the police
