"Long Ago ( And Far Away)" written by Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin for the 1944 Hollywood musical "Cover Girl" was recorded by Perry Como on February 08, 1944, for RCA Victor. This recording is unusual because it is a cappella. At that time there was a ban on all commercial recording by members of the American Federation of Musicians. Using vocal accompaniment allowed the record companies to get around the ban.
Not being backed by a full orchestra, such a beautiful song loses a lot even with the best of singers like Perry Como.
