I have an '88 Toyota Pickup 2WD with the longbed. it has a fuel injected 22R-E 2.4L four and a 3 speed automatic w/overdrive. All in all, it's a pretty good combination, and surprisingly quick on its feet for only having 112 horsepower.
Some of the pickups in this generation (1984-1988) came with a four cylinder diesel and the most sought after ones have the 22R-ET. The T designates turbocharging, and this engine was advertised to have 137 horsepower, certainly more than enough for a little truck!
The most sought after Toyota trucks of this vintage, besides the diesel and the Turbo 22RE, are the 1 tons. You could order a cab chassis, a pickup with DRW, or a pickup with SRW that didn't look much different than you average light Toyota truck! They had full floating rear axles and good gearing so they could carry amazing payloads, and they came stock with either a 22R-E or Toyota's 3.0 liter V6. It's pretty amazing that there was so much variation in these trucks considering how long this body style was around.

  • If you don't like the song mute it and play your own music!

  • Does it stay in third after 47 mph or does it shift into overdrive? My truck shifts into overdrive at about 40mph, you can tell because the engine speed drops way down. The engine will be revving up pretty high if you get on the highway without the overdrive.

  • That's cool! Do you have the 1 ton model or just a regular one like mine?

  • All you guys get the 1/10 scale size n you won't miss it no more. Lot of fun with the little trucks as well

  • Ok no joke the blue 1 ton is my old truck. Where the hell was this photo taken. And it must have been around 1998-2000 because that is the only time it had little wheels and that stupid topper on it. I still have ol blue but shes been in the bone-yard for 8 years now. It give me and my dad over a million miles. Why don't toyota bring these trucks back. They where much better trucks than they produce now. I even think if I could get a new 1 ton for 25-30 grand, it would be in my driveway today.

  • Miss my '88

  • Ive got a 84 ext cab 4x4 with a 6" lift and bogger tires. Still a mutha fuckin beast at 250,000
