Richard Lopez plays Alto Flute and Trombone on the Jay Rouse arrangement of O Come O Come Emmanuel sung by the Mountain View Church of the Nazarene Choir. Video recorded by Alexa Lopez on December 24th, 2007 Christmas Eve service in Tumwater, Washington. This piece was originally scored for choir, piano and solo cello. Worship pastor is Cathy Freeby, piano by Joyce Moore, Ron Quinn on chimes and Kelly Boyd on Music. Richard only began playing Alto Flute two months prior to this performance plus with a whole-lotta help from above.

Quote from Jay Rouse:

Cathy -

Well...all i have to say is WOW! I have to be honest and tell you when i first read your email and "imagined" a trombone playing the part of a cello, i was concerned (at the very least) -- however, once i saw the video, I was overwhelmed. It was tasteful and beautiful -- so well played (pass on my congrats to the flute/trombone player and the pianist) -- so well interpreted. Your choir sounds wonderful as well!

I'm so glad you decided to use the piece and didn't let the lack of a cello player slow you down!

Give my greeting to your choir and instrumentalist. I'm so pleased to have been a small part of your Christmas season! Blessings...

Thanks for writing -
Jay

  • Very, very nice...love the trombone...that he learned alto flute is amazing...

  • Fantastic job by Mr. Lopez. Blend, balance, pitch, dynamics and phrasing amongst all was breathtaking. It was so good to hear a choir that was void of individuals sticking out, especially in terms of vibrato.
