TORONTO - The controversial decision to establish one of Canada's first black-focused public schools to help lower a staggering dropout rate in the country's largest school district...whats your opinion...well get heard on Tuesday March 2nd 2008
That's what I don't understand. They say that we need to take responsibility and when we do, it poses a problem. They tell us "no, leave your children in these horrible public schools". "Let your children rot intellectually in special ED classes". When we take sh.. into our own hands, , they want to organize a national debate and give their opinion. Their opinion is not needed. We know what's best for our children and so do whites. That's precisely why the education system
Oh my goodness. Don't do drugs. Don't join a gang. Do your homework. That is how you stay in school. You don't need a history class specifically tailored to your ethnicity and you don't need to be surrounded by people of the same skin colour in order to do well in school. As one of the only muslim and arab people in my entire SCHOOL growing up, and still doing well, I know that this school is not needed and not progressive for society. Do your homework, don't be lazy. Then you will pass.
The greater public demands that the black community "takes responsibility" for its youth, & the minute we do just that, they got a problem. African Canadians need a national identity. Whether from the caribbean, africa or born canadians, we need 2 stand under 1 flag & stop the collonialism. & I feel ppl think an education being offered @ an all black school will somehow be subpar from a mainstreem education. The only segregation going on r done by non blacks who will not let their kids attend.
We don't need Afro-centric schools. We need the curriculum to DELIBERATELY go out of its way to include African history, & African contributions to all disciplines. Given the severe Eurocentrism of North America, this is the only measure that can reverse the brainwashing effects of our current society on todays Black youth. For instance, math classes discuss Pythagorus, Hippocrates, & etc. What about the Black Egyptian scholars who taught these Greek math "pioneers"? The curriculum ignores them.
