Thanks for this view. As a student at Roosevelt University back in the 70's I wrote a paper comparing and contrasting 3 buildings by John Root, and later Burnham and Root; The Monadnock, Building, The Rookery, and the Railway Exchange Building. The Rookery is a marvel. Since that time, the paint was removed from the skylight, letting natural light flood the lobby. Wonderful! I never got a view of the staircase because visitors weren't allowed up there.
@Empire Chris. Fabulous job! You really showed the essence of this most wonderful of Chicago Loop office buildings. I really like the way you contrasted that stodgy old Greek Revival bank building across the street with the strong, unique red brick beauty of the Rookery. That lobby is a dream, even on a grey cloudy day. The warmth of the interior lighting creates an interesting contrast with the cool natural light coming through the skylight.
