This is a clip from a primary school in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. With the Government of India making primary education free and compulsory (RTE Act) we argue that it is equally important to focus on the school infrastructure and teacher training also. This is a glimpse from one of the "better" run schools, where all the grades share a single room. The "school" is just a single room. It is the teacher's ability in this case who is running the school and has managed to keep the children enthused and active! The charts hanging from the lines and the trays in the shelves are a part of the activity based learning program under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan program. Apart from this there is little else to help kids learn in creative and fun ways. We think this needs to be addressed along with guaranteeing free education. If this is what he gets, its quite easy for him to stop coming to school.
