This is amazing. I heard the original had so much more life--oh how! And they look fantastic but less human than the video cast...but they are supposed to be CATS. This was like opera...thanks.

Quick Question though ? Isn't this kinda in the wrong sequence with memories coming in early? ... Or was this specially done ... or was this the original order? Because from my perspective this is pre-grizabellas introduction.
I have really only seen the more modern version of Cats where Grizabella Memory comes after the Jellicle Ball Song around the middle of the show.

The part of the video before Grizabella enters, was pre-recorded at the Winter Garden Theatre. That's what the television-watching audience saw. Those at the Gershwin Theatre, where the Tonys were presented, saw the number done live, with 2 cast replacements. Stephen Hanan and Harry Groener were nominees, and chose to sit in the audience. Their understudies, Joel Robertson and Bob Morrissey, took their roles on the Gershwin stage, and appear in the portion at the very end when Grizabella enters.

Other originals who didn't appear on the Tonys are Steven Gelfer (Carbuckety -- original cast member Steven Hack, his understudy, appeared instead, as Mr. Gelfer had been out for a few months with an injury); Renè Ceballos (her understudy Nora Brennan, now a casting director of "Billy Elliott", appears here as Cassandra -- René had not yet left the show, but opted to not do the Tonys); and Janet Hubert ( who had left the show, replaced by Sundy Leigh Leake).

It's most of the original cast. By the time the Tony Awards came around (many months after the show opened), some of the original cast had left the show. Marlene Danielle is indeed playing Demeter. She'd taken over the role from Wendy Edmead, who originated it. The original, Donna King, is Bombalurina here. Marlene took over Bombalurina when Donna left and played that role until the show closed, being the only cast member who was with show from opening night to closing night.
