For some people, Christmas just wouldn't be Christmas without carols and songs to mark the holiday. As soon as the Thanksgiving table is cleared, it seems, the Christmas music comes out in some homes. Holiday music runs the gamut from classic, traditional hymns and Christmas carols to more contemporary selections. From "Frosty the Snowman" to "Merry Christmas, Baby," Christmas music offers something for nearly everyone.
Traditional Christmas carols are songs that may focus on the religious aspect of the holiday. Hymns such as "Away in a Manger," "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing," "Joy to the World," "O Holy Night" and "Silent Night" are just a few examples of well-known traditional Christmas carols.
Christmas carols can also be more secular, celebrating Santa Claus, his reindeer, or sounds of the winter season - like "Jingle Bells." Examples of more secular Christmas carols include "White Christmas," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," "The 12 Days of Christmas," "Winter Wonderland" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Many popular music artists have recorded Christmas albums - from Perry Como to Mariah Carey to Josh Groban. Mariah Carey's 1994 song "All I Want for Christmas Is You" tops ''Billboard'' magazine's list of the 100 Most Popular Holiday Songs. "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee is second, followed by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra's medley of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Carol of the Bells." Others in the top 10 include Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song" and Bing Crosby's "White Christmas."
Some Christmas songs are more of the novelty variety. Songs such as "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer" and "The Chipmunk Song" seem to remain popular year after year.
What if you want to find some good Christmas music? You have lots of options. If you have access to iTunes, you can easily find some Christmas music there to download and add to a Christmas music playlist. You can also find Christmas music CDs from online retailers such as Amazon.com, Best Buy and CD Universe. And if you just can't get enough Christmas music this holiday season, many radio stations will switch formats and play nothing but holiday tunes for several weeks leading up to Christmas Day.
