@Sudan329 I agree, but at times it seems like he was sucking up to Lorenzo de Medici. Not that this is unexpected or even flawed, but it makes the Discourses a superior work.

Machiavelli is not a Machiavellian. He wrote The Prince while observing the ruthless behaviour of the powerful families such as the Madicis, the Borgians and the Vespuccis. He does not advocate anything. He is writing a book based on the reality of power. The book is politically distinctive and is ethically, emotionally detached.
Machiavelli wrote this when he got out of jail. He was living on a farm in isolation. He studied much and questioned many things. His book The Prince took after his death and it is a brillant piece of work. A timeless masterpiece
