February 1, 2003, after completing a successful 16 day science mission, the crew of Space Shuttle Columbia was headed back to her home port in Florida. During reentry, hot gases blasted through a hole in the shuttle's left wing, which was damaged during launch on January 16. Over the skies of Texas, the shuttle Columbia succumbed to the heat of reentry and broke apart, killing her seven crew members.
