The Malakans (also spelled "Molokans"), a Russian farming religious sect, purchased the land in the Ensenada valley, now known as Guadalupe, from the Mexican government in 1905 to escape the draft in Czarist Russia. Today, the area, just a couple hours from San Diego, is a thriving wine and tourist destination. The museum in this video was the living quarters of the Russians. Their decedents run the restaurant and the museum. The Russians have long since blended in with the local indigenous population, and do not speak Russian in their daily lives, however we meet a woman decedent who tries to keep the Russian language at least present in their homes. My wife, a Russian, and her were exchanging some names of Russian foods, which the Mexican-Russians have adapted with a twist. My wife noted that they had incorrectly spelled a Russian word on their menu, which the woman quickly agreed to correct for future printings.

  • My mother was born and raised there. She spoke Russian, Spanish and English. Her delicious food was Russian and Mexican. No chili power in the borscht! But she sure did love her jalapenos!

  • @mx4jc1 La mayoria regresaron a los angeles. en 1958 paracaidistas llegaron y los rusos, como su relegion no permitaba usar armas, decidieron de salir del valle.

  • I had a manager here in the US, her last name was Samarin.

  • Muy interezante!! una pregunta y todos los rusos donde quedaron?? el gobierno los expulso o se quedaron en Mexico?

  • i was born and raided in el valle too.

  • There may be only indigenous Mexican people living in that area but Mexico in general is very mixed as Spanish is a European language and Mexico was a European colony, i wish people would remember mexican is not a race and call people by their real race which is native indian or European or a mix of those and possibly a mix of African or Asian. :)

  • Wow, if you're alert enough,....for sure ya will learn something new!!! Hmm....i wonder what they prefer, bread or corn tortillas.....
