Air Crash Investigation Mayday The Plane That Flew Too High Part 5 out of 6. On 16 August 2005, West Caribbean Airways Flight 708 flew through a moderate hurricane. Because of that, the pilots divert their plane to Maracaibo to attempt an emergency landing. But then the pilots report that both engines have failed, it then stalls and crashes into a cattle farm in Venezuela. The cause of the crash was pilot error. The tragedy was a grim reminder of a deadly mix of storms, overloads, and cockpit confusion.

  • The main Independent variable causing this accident was excess wieght. Had the aircraft been just 5000 pounds lighter that altitude would have been fine. The autopilot does not have the capacity to push the nose down in case of high angle of attack. It is set to hold an assigned alitiude and will continue to hold it even if the airspeed falls. When in doubt push the nose down to reduce angle of attack.

  • Blatant pilot error - no comment on the FO, as it's common that they avoid confrontation with the PIC, however I was trained that recovering from a stall with the absolute least amount of altitude loss was one of the most important things I'd ever learn in pilot training. For these COMMERCIAL PILOTS to lose ~31,000 ft while failing to realize that they were in a stall or nose-over and recover is beyond my comprehension.THREE MINUTES?! I know times were tough.. but those pax depended on them. :(
