The world famous Children and Young Women's Chorus of the China National Symphony Orchestra, was founded in 1983 by Yang Hongnian, a Professor of Conducting Department of the Central Conservatory of Music. In the past 25 years, under the training of Professor Yang, a renowned music educator and conductor, the chorus has accumulated more than 1000 songs and over 600 performances. The Chorus has performed music in Europe, America and Asia as well as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, leaving excellent impressions everywhere they visited. They have been awarded eight international major awards.

In 1987 the Chorus was invited to tour the U.S., participating in the Third International Children's Choir Festival held in Washington D.C. Former President Ronald Reagan signed and awarded the Highest Appreciation Certificate to the Chorus. In 1989 the Chorus received an honorary certificate from the Hungarian Kodaly Association commending its distinguished performance in an International Competition of Kodaly Chorus Works.

The Chorus has twice accompanied the Chinese Olympic Committee to visit Monaco and Moscow in 1993 and 2001, for the Chinese bidding of the Olympics. In 1996, the Chorus participated in the 44th International Polyphonic Contest "Guido d' Arezzo" and was awarded four prizes, breaking the all-time record in this Competition. In 1999, the Chorus attended the "Moscow Young Talent Music Festival" for Pushkin's 200 Anniversary and was awarded not only a Special Award, but also a Number One Award for "Golden Music" for the First International Chorus Television Competition.

In February 2003, as the only Asian representative, the Chorus conducted a showcase performance at ACDA's annual meeting and participated in ACDA's concerts at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Riverside Church of New York. The superb performance of the Chorus was highly praised with a standing ovation by the 9000 top conductors participating from all over the world. They applauded with enthusiasm and the tour was a great success.

In May 2004, the chorus was invited to participate with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Chorus, and Latovia Chorus for Mahler's, "Songs of the Earth." In November 2006, the Young Women's Choir participated in the 2006 Busan International Choral Festival and Competition in Korea and won two Gold Prizes, one in the Classical Music Category and the other in the Ethnic Music Category. These were the two top prizes given during the competition. Conductor, Mr. Yang Li, won the Best Conductor Prize at this competition.

In December 2007, the chorus was invited to sing the opening concert at the National Center for the Performing Arts. On August 8th 2008, 66 singers from the chorus participated in the Opening Ceremony of the '29th Olympic Games' singing "The Olympic Hymn". Besides regular concerts and competitions, the chorus has also participated in various charity performances, as well as modeling performances for nation-wide public school music teachers.

For over 25 years, Professor Yang Hongnian has trained over 1000 young music lovers. The Chorus has won numerous honors for China, and as a result many colorful and magnificent pages have been written in Chinese Choral Music History because of their work.
