Marvellous...

I can't vouch for this particular recording, but I saw him play bassoon at the Village Vangard in New York City around 1979. He was definitely using a traditional bassoon reed; I remember because we talked about reed-making during the break. By design it was likely a flat soft reed so it wouldn't be quite so difficult for him to punch the sound out.

Is he using a double reed or a sax-like mouthpiece... cause the sound is a little direct for a classical bassoon, but who knows maybe he made his reeds or he just blows the hell out of the bassoon? Anybody, with comprehensive info ?

@anthonyarre From your ears and some staff paper.

he may be playing on a miniature sax-like mouthpiece that fits on the bocal. such mouthpieces were made for doublers to avoid playing on a double reed.

My teacher once said that french bassoon was such an aweful instrument that only the French used it out of patriotism... But he says a lot of things.
For some reason, I'd say that it sounds like a saxophonist playing on a bassoon, and it's actually what it is.
