mag4musicians magazine 8/08 news & infos

What the future sounded like? In our context we'd rather ask: How have the sounds of the furture been created? While researching for this issue we did stumble by chance on several references to the famous BBC Science fiction serial Dr. Who.
Here is a trailer with the original soundtrack.

Doctor Who - Original Theme Music Video 1963

By todays point of view we'd say this is synthesizer music. But there is a tiny problem as the music is from 1963 so at least one year prior to Bob Moogs 1st synthesizer. The riddle is solve in the next video: David Shea a well know experimental composer explains how this music has been composed at that time.

With the radioworkshop the BBC had something similar to the 'Studio für Elektonische Musik' by the German TV/Radiostation WDR in Cologne which had been conducted first by Herbert Eimert and then by Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Besides the BBC radioworkshop there have been developments regarding electronic music in England by private persons leading to the 1st British Synthesizer EMS VCS 3 in 1969. The threepart video around composer Tristram Cary also gives a view on these developments and some interesting examples how these new synthesizers affected the music of famous ands like Hawkwind, Pink Floyd and Brain Eno with Roxy music.

The vintage synth of this issue is presented to you by a real professor: Prof. Aaron Lanterman von Georgia Tech shows the Korg MS-20 within a serial of lectures on 'Electronics for Music Synthesis'.

Choosing the right university for study allows to attend really cool lectures. But there are some more interesting videos from this serial of lectures. The 1st is dealing with the history of synthesizer development with some sound backgroundinformation and sound examples e.g. from the very rare Yamaha GX-1.

The 2nd video deals with porting synthesizer technology to the digital domain on DSP. Also you'll find on this channal on blip.tv more indepth video for the true specialist dealing with circuitry for complex waveshaping, OpAmp and voltage controlled oscillators.
