This year marks the 50th anniversary of manned space flight, as well as the 50th year of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS).

The Islamic Republic of Iran is a key participant in the celebrations being held in Vienna, which were attended by the head of the Iranian Space Agency, Dr Hamid Fazeli, as well as UN Ambassador Ali Soltanieh.

Despite fears expressed by a few nations that Iran's space program may also have military applications, Dr Fazeli was quick to reassure the international community about Iran's peaceful intentions. He cited the many civilian benefits of its space program, including medical research, remote sensing for disaster management and improved communications capabilities.

Iran has invested substantially in the growth of its space program, with a new national spaceport under development in the South Eastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan province.

Later this year, Iran will send a living monkey into orbit, as part of its research towards the commitment of seeing the first Iranian astronauts by 2019.

Iran's participation in this meeting has clearly shown its willingness to cooperate at an international level with other countries on the peaceful uses of outer space. The rapid progress of its space program also shows Iran's determination to demonstrate its regional leadership and technical expertise in conquering humanity's final frontier.
