A touching film with a precocious child cast. A movie full of social observations free of a political agenda, capturing the pulse of the todays education system, the immigration problem and more. Primary school kids facing tragedy and lost of innocence after their former teacher’s suicide, and a substitute teacher with a big heart but confronting his own personal inferno thrue his inmigration status. To me this was the Best Foreign Language Film in 2012.

To Oscar (the Academy) another nominee!

Hmm...maybe my comment was too concise. The film deals with some 'modern' aspects of repressive professionalism but the traditional male teacher role was both repressive and abusive...Monsieur Lazhar might have got away with clipping a pupil round the ear but his emotional intelligence and concern wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes...

repressive professionalism is destroying education and warding off people who would otherwise be interested in the teaching profession. Especially men.

A devastating film about grief and repressive professionalism in education/childcare.
