This is Caruso's performance (Nov. 7, 1909) of the aria "Il fior che avevi a me tu dato" (Bizet's Carmen) restored by a sound engineer at the famous Lucas Film Studios using the latest digital audio computer technology.

This clip is part of a documentary on the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake called "The Damnedest Finest Ruins" created by author and screenwriter James Dalessandro who also wrote the book "1906" based on which a Hollywood movie is being produced (scheduled for 2012). Caruso created the role of Don José in Bizet's Carmen in San Francisco the night before the earthquake of 1906.

Unfortunately the quality of Caruso's singing has suffered in the process of converting and uploading it to YouTube. On the original DVD Caruso voice is clear as a bell without any distortion.

As a principle I have never made any advertisement for CD's/DVD's or anything else on YT or my Caruso website, but this time I'll make an exception (absolutely no personal gain for myself !!!).

I find James Dalessandro's documentary exceptional, thrilling and definately worth the few dollars it costs:

  • Simply amazing...this is a miracle! I will definitely be purchasing these restorations!

  • aronsande - glad you like it. For me one of the most "genuine" voices I've heard. No pretense, no show, no effort to impress - just pure emotion.

  • This is very steady sound and wonderful intense.

It is especially enjoyable with recordings that is getting a skillful refreshing that you also have heard so many times before. Transfers like this one will give hope for all these people of the digital era that cannot stand anything else than clinical perfection.

Here is the artistry pure perfection and the sound of modern standards except that you never hear singers with that powerful presence these days. Thank you for your lovely efforts!

  • Thanks, Bengt. I really cherish your comprehensive, intelligent and - not least - empathic comments. You really know what you are talking about. And regards to "powerful presence" I cannot agree with you more !

  • Thanks for sharing this with us. Merry Christmas!

  • Most welcome, medea39 - and Happy New Year !

  • A hundred years ago .... beautifully restored. What a power of voice, what empathy, what a heart.

I wouldn't really know any later tenors that had all of his qualities. Sublime...

  • Good heavens! Even on YT, his voice comes shining through. Tom, it is so admirable that you don't advertise products on your site, but letting us know of the DVD by Mr. Dalessandro is a huge and wonderful service to the fans of your excellent site. Thank you!

  • For much better sound see "Enrico Caruso - Che Gelida Manina (Remastered)"

  • After being forced out of his hotel and fleeing to safety, Caruso swore that he would never return to San Francisco again.

  • Incredibly clean Caruso - magnificent - none like him. Wonderful restoration.

  • "What an organ", - Luciano Pavarotti.

  • I don't care at all for this reproduction. The voice has a distortion (a "buzz") on the surface which shouldn't be there. The restored Senza Nisciuno, on the other hand, is practically distortion-free, and the sound is glorious.

  • 5 *****

  • Thanks a lot!
