A chronometer escapement for a pendulum clock in lego technic.
Of all the escapement models that I have thus far created, this is the most economical. In its latest form it has a 'knife edge' suspension, and a single 5:1 gear mesh comprises the train. The details are as follows:-

pendulum freq. approx 37 oscilations per min.
pendulum amplitude approx 3.5 deg
pendulum Q unknown, but not very high
drive weight 15g
rate of fall of weight 0.43mm/sec
power consumption 63 micro W
estimated efficiency of 5:1 gear mesh 70%
If I were to try and build a complete clock in lego (aiming for 30 hour duration), I would use this escapement, but I would first greatly improve the pendulum Q as much as possible. I would also lengthen the pendulum to increase its period and also put the escapement lower down the rod, to reduce the pendulum amplitude.

  • How is the pendulum impulsed? Maybe I am just missing it.

  • Once the escape wheel is unlocked, it accelerates until its lowest tooth contacts the red brick on the passing pendulum at the bottom of the video. This tooth then pushes the pendulum until the escape wheel is relocked.

  • @horolophile then how does the pendulum pass the bottom tooth on it's way back?

  • Yeah i'm not the only lego noob building lego escapements :D

  • Oooh, nifty!

  • I WAS just missing it....just barely. I see it now. Thank you for the explanation. Impressive piece of work you have there.

  • That's it! Very nice!
