To celebrate Macca's 68th Birthday I decided to upload the classic song from the 1971 LP RAM. "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" is a song by Paul and Linda McCartney from the album Ram. Released in the United States as a single on 2 August 1971, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1971. Paul McCartney won the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists in 1971 for the song.
The song is noted for its sound effects, including the sounds of thunder, lightning, and rain, heard between the first and second verse, the sound of a telephone dialing, and a message machine, heard after the second verse, and a sound of chirping sea birds and wind by the seashore. Linda's voice is heard in the harmonies as well as the bridge section of the "Admiral Halsey" portion of the song.
McCartney said "Uncle Albert" was based on his uncle. "He's someone I recall fondly, and when the song was coming it was like a nostalgia thing." McCartney also said, "As for Admiral Halsey, he's one of yours, an American admiral", referring to Admiral William "Bull" Halsey.

  • Thanks for the posting. It sort of makes me homesick for the 70's, and that makes me a little sad. - What also makes me sad is when I compare this music to the music of today. 2000-2010 was the worst decade of music ever.

  • Sir Paul #1 Beatle and lovely Linda R.I.P!

  • @Gengar10000000000 Paul had an Uncle Albert. This is supposed to be an admission to the older generation that young people have different priorities in life and its not the same as it was.

  • @Vizinczey No I have never heard of this song being played live by Paul. I wish he would.

  • Lovely Linda, LILY (Linda I Love You)!!!

  • Hope the full "James Paul McCartney Show" segment of this song is included in the upcoming Paul McCartney Archive Collection reissue of "Ram" :D

  • @corebare //////thanks for posting my sentiments verbatim....for whatever reason I've been in the wax nostalgic state of mind...AND...it makes me sad as well....mostly because of the public's overall apathetic bullshit attitude toward everything/everybody BULLOCKS I say. The world is going down the proverbial shitter and no one cares about anyone except for themselves.State of music??? Personally I love much of the music produced since 2000. It was the 80's, to me, that sucked!

  • oh i love Paul hes so cute

  • @nshvnancy no, he played all instruments in "McCartney" but in "Ram" he had a litlle crew ;-)

  • THE BUTTER WOULDN'T MELT SO I PUT IT IN A PIE!!!!

  • Great song!

  • @corebare Nine Inch Nails put out some really good stuff. QOTSA. Them Crooked Vultures. There is still good music these days!
