Asmara, Eritrea: January 2008 -- Congressman Donald Payne who has just concluded a three-day working visit to Eritrea said that he has witnessed the Eritrean people's desire for peace and that he would strive to promote peace between the people of Eritrea and Ethiopia.
In the course of his visit to the Southern region in the company of the regional Administrator, Mr. Mustafa Nurhusein, the Congressman observed the on-going development activities towards achieving food security. The local population accorded him warm welcome and hosted a reception in his honor at Daero Quinat.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mustafa explained that despite the TPLF regime's attempts to undermine the Eritrean people's endeavors to promote all-round development, such enemy hostile acts have nevertheless been rebuffed through the steadfastness of Eritrean nationals.
Likewise, the Chairman of the Regional Assembly, Mr. Weldai Gebre, pointed out that many Eritrean citizens in the Southern region have not only been displaced but were also subjected to acts of abuse and robbery following the regime's war of aggression. He also called on the US government, as one of the main guarantors of the Algiers Agreement, to play major role in the implementation of the agreement.
Stating that he had closely observed the Eritrean government's efforts to improve the people's standard of living and step up development, Congressman Donald Payne asserted that the United States respects the Eritrean government's stance and wishes to develop good relations with Eritrea.
