I have never played an Ewi so I can't say.
I did try playing thw WX5 with a different non-breath controlled synth - the Yamaha MU100R and the result was disappointing.
It sounded tinny and synthetic. Playing expressively was almost impossible. I'm sure there are other good synths available, but the important issue for me is that it's sensitive to physical things like breath pressure, lip tightness, etc - they help you feel more connected to the instrument - more in control.

That's understandable. I was curious because I am looking into buying a wind controller. I play sax, mainly alto and tenor but also soprano lately. I didn't want to find my self $1200 deep, yet the VL70 sounds so good. Have you tried any other units like the akai ewi series? If so what did you think?

... I.e. you play a note, and the delay between when you play it, and when you hear it is much longer than when you use hardware synths.
In worst cases this can affect how you play and make quick passages almost impossible.
The VL70m is very portable. I couldn't imagine lugging a computer around to use the software synth if I was playing away from home, but the VL70m fits in my briefcase with my music :)

@cosmicseed Thanks for the kind words. I use a Yamaha VL70m synth to produce the sounds. It's designed to work with wind drivers like the WX5 and makes it easy to play expressively since it's much more responsive to change in breath pressure, and lip tightness etc.
I've tried software synths, but the problem is the response time. Hardware synths respond very quickly. But the response time on software synths is much slower... (cont'd next comment)

That has a really nice sound. Curious, what sound generator are you using? Have you tried using ableton or other sound production software synth with this?

Thanks :) It's a really easy instrument to play. I find it helps me if I play stuff I really like or know well.
