Josh White did not write this song although he did record it in 1945, by which time it was already well known. The song was written by Jimmy Cox in 1923. The first recording was by Julia Lee in 1927. Bessie Smith's recording in 1929 was probably mainly responsible for popularising the song. Her recording can be found on You Tube. As far as I know Eric Clapton has never claimed to have written the song.
