Amtrak 4 Leads Coast Starlight #14 At San Luis Obispo, CA, 8/8/09

Amtrak 4 leads more than 4 hour late Coast Starlight #14 into San Luis Obispo. The train was majorly delayed thanks to Surfliner 774 hitting a pedestrain near Chatswroth, keeping #14 stuck in Simi Valley due to the investigation. The crew put on a great show while the train departed, and my thanks to them. They made chasing the train worth-while.


More info: Two days later, when Amtrak #11 was returning south with the Amtrak 4 leading still, the train slammed into a Tomato truck at Soledad. The units nose was pretty bent back, and the entire front was...well...ketchup. Amtrak 4 was set out, and the train set had to be towned by a dead-head Surfliner 798/799. Amtrak 4 was later brought back south by UP 8447 (SLO Helpers). Just saying here...I'm glad I saw it before its crash! A picture of the crash may be viewed at this link, on railpictures.net:

Yes, that is the old phase the cars held once before. I believe they were more like stencils that could be simply removed rather than painted over. Either way, they're not there anymore! Thanks for the comment.

I've been on the Coast Starlight #14 many times from LA to Seattle, and many of the attendants, dining room servers, etc. need to learn COURTESY! and CUSTOMER SERVICE ... I think they have been doing this job so long that they just don't care, after all Amtrak isn't going to fire them with Union seniority!
