Alex Delgado, Timpani (lol)

(I don't usually do this.)

I am fascinated to find that my very own video contains a flame war happening in the comment section. Youtube is famous for these, but never in my wildest imagination did I anticipate a video uploaded for my colleagues' amusement would EVER get this many views. I suppose it's my own fault for giving it such a title.

Anyway. Upon perusing the ever-so-helpful comments, I found that NOT ONE SINGLE COMMENTER has any uploads of themselves playing timpani. NOT A SINGLE ONE. Not even the guy with the word "timpani" in his username.

I think we can all agree (or, at least, I agree with myself) that in the world of Youtube flamery, if you REALLY want to make it to the next level of virtual conflagration, there's one simple rule to follow...

Put up, or shut up.

In other words, Let he who has not played a wrong note, cast the first binary blaze. Flame not, lest ye be flamed.

Anyway, there's a larger and more important point to made here. While everyone was perusing the internetz, raining their digital infernos down on all who chose "upload" over "browse," my aforementioned friends and serious timpani/percussion playing colleagues were in the practice room. While you are chuckling to yourself at your oh-so-witty comment and clicking submit, those hitherto mentioned gentlemen and ladies are taking auditions and winning jobs.

  • @TacoDude314 once you hit a certain hardness in timp. music, you basically have to sit down in order to get all the pitch changes in. plus in my opinion its more comfortable.

  • Read the fucking description..

  • curious

    why ru sitting down?

    and I do play timpani

    though only in gr8

  • Hate to be so harsh, but can't a monkey be trained to play the timpani like that....? lol

  • Things that I love:

    1. The comments in this video.

    2. Delgado's response to these comments. I am so thoroughly pleased with this :)

  • @JARLofSTEEVE Try playing the timpani part to Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra or Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier Walzes whilst standing up then!

  • the singular is TIMPANO

  • bjw's right. The root of the word "timpani" is the latin "Tympanum," but the word itself is italian, so it follows the standard italian plural rules. Dwight Thomas (Omaha Symphony) used to have a webpage discussing the etymology of the word, but I can't seem to find it.

  • @bjw32494 I do not have proof, but it was published by Premier who got a Latin expert to solve the mystery. Most people miss-spell timpani with one or even two ys, getting it confused with the Latin word Tympanum, which is an architectural term and the medical name for the ear drum. Timpani is actually a different word and follows the standard Latin singular/plural rules for a word of its type and spelling (relating to gender/noun etc),
