Delegates from 194 nations are attending the UN Climate Chance Conference in Durban, but before it had even begun, they did not seem optimistic. The chances of achieving a binding agreement that could help save the planet appear remote. A great deal of effort and bargaining are going into producing a follow-up treaty to the Kyoto Protocol, but it's the big industrialized countries that seem most reluctant to commit to strictly regulating carbon dioxide emissions. What is the outlook for the years after 2012? Do we simply have to resign to global warming and the natural disasters that result?

Our guests:
Dagmar Dehmer is a journalist who has worked for the German daily "Tagesspiegel" in Berlin since 2001. Before that she worked for the business desk of the Badische Zeitung, a regional newspaper based in the southern city of Freiburg. She has specialized in the environment and development, particularly in Africa.

Christian Schwägerl - After studying biology Schwägerl was an arts and sciences correspondent for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in Berlin from 2001 to 2007. Today he writes for newsmagazine "Der Spiegel". He specializes in topics in science, biopolicy, climate change, climate protection and research policy.

Ramesh Jaura was born in India. After completing a Masters at the University of Delhi in 1964, he then began work as a journalist. Since 1987 he has been the head of the IPS news agency for the German-speaking world in Berlin. Globalisation and its effects on the lives of people in the developing world are at the centre of his reporting.

  • Rubbish !!

Introduce taxes on Earthquakes and give tax invoices to volcanoes and don't forget the sun. The sun is the biggest weather breaker and should be taxed as well.

The individuals on the video sound so hopeless and superficial so that I even feel sorry for them, for what they do. Trying to sell this biggest phony corny lie to the people, who these days know how to read and know how to think.

  • The US GOT OUT of the Kyoto Accord long time ago becuase they can't handle the accord due tot he fact that their side of the economy relies heavily on the Oil. without the oil the US will collapse. Thats the reason why they push CANADA with the TAR sands to continue drilling becuase they US is so eveil enough that they don't give dam aboout the environment and who gets hurt to get their oil from the world. Saudi arabia will soon collapse because Canada has more oil than Saudi Arabia now.

  • Its not communication the factor but Re-tolling will cost the world 300yrs of the time we have waisted when creating Oil generated oil polluting sources and manufacturing companies that uses Electricity source ran from oil. Re-tooling from Oil source energy will cost the Earth big, becuase that will involve changing everything that is made out of oil from Manufacturing, Electricity generators, cars, buildings etc. but slowly we can if we do something about it every yr.

  • @canofsand

You need to talk to the Sun.

Maybe it will cooperate with your AGW religion.

Now it looks that, by 2035 we will be in a mini ice age.

    Bad Sun!

There has not been a warming trend for A DECADE NOW!

i KNOW IT IS MY FAULT BECAUSE i CAN FIT A LEAST SQUARE LINE ON THE DATA.

Instead of CO2, we should talk about the Hubbert Curve, overpopulation and "brave-new-world" style fascism.

  • @64whatever

Scientists-Schminists.Where are they? Who are they?

Most of them are not scientists as we've learned from both Climategates.

There's NO evidence that CO2 levels effect global temperatures..NONE!

Any "scientist" who can't differenciate between cause and effect is NOT a scientist and should be sacked.

The whole carbon dioxide issue is nothing but a racket.

If they have any hard evidence why don't they show it to the public?

    97% is a LIE.

  • @64whatever Hey, you're such a hack that you use "97%" instead of the more common myth of "90%". Calling you simply "intellectually dishonest" is too kind.

  • @64whatever Stop echoing discredited bunk, alarmist "useful idiot."

    hotair (dot) com/archives/2011/05/17/huntsman-i-believe-in-climate-change-because-90-of-scientists-do/

(If link doesn't work, Google "Huntsman: I believe in climate change because 90% of scientists do".)

  • @judomagyar Thanks Mr Climate Scientist. You're right and 97% of the scientific community is wrong. All of the world's scientific organisations are wrong. Look at the facts.

  • "save the world from catastrophic climate change?"

    No we can not.

Taxing carbon has no effect on climate.

CO2 has a very little effect.

    The sun determines climate.
