I actually had a sit down conversation with him a couple of years ago over lunch. very interesting man. told me a story about one of his assistants that had a severe sleep walking problem; that he would just follow them for miles late at night to the sea cliffs out in California, just to observe this person, very observational.

Interesting comments and very humbling. Nowadays, there are too many astronomers totally obssessed with modding their scopes for hardcore imaging. I was thinking of buying an 8 inch SCT but, then again, I might just buy a 16 inch dob; maybe 'seeing' the universe in more important than imaging it.

I think John has a lot to say...but more than just stating opinion he actively DOES engage people in thought and wonder.

I am one of those people, who are willing to spend most of their time, just watching the sky with such big telescopes. Other ordinary astronomers, are saying this is crazy, it's uncomfortable....

I'll never forget meeting and conversating with John Dobson. It was a highlight of my life. He posed a question to me "What is your level of education?" I being a bit ashamed said, "Merely a High School Graduate." He replied, "I've met people, like yourself, who are far more intelligent than those with a wall full of college degrees." Those were words I'll never forget and will always cherish.

Germany, eh? That old guy sure gets around. Don't forget to get that telescope out for the public once in awhile. Thanks for watching my show.
