TodaysNetworkNews: 13 January 2010: World Bank: Port-au-Prince, Haiti - In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti, the World Bank is mobilizing its resources to help Haiti respond to the catastrophe and stands ready with financial assistance.

The World Bank announced that it will provide $100 million dollars in emergency funds to Haiti to help the country recover and rebuild from yesterdays earthquake.

Yvonne Tsikata, World Banks Country Director for Haiti, said the funds will be used for projects and services the country needs the most. It is working with other development partners to conducts a post-disaster needs assessment.

In Haiti, where schools and hospitals have been destroyed, the World Bank plans to carry out community-driven development projects such as school feeding and school reconstruction, said Tsikata.

There are also plans to establish the Haiti Reconstruction Fund, a multi-donor trust fund needed to mobilize international support for recovery and reconstruction. The Fund, said Tsikata, will help consolidate donor support for Haiti.

There are currently 14 main World Bank projects active in Haiti in areas including disaster risk management, infrastructure, community-driven development, education, and economic governance.

Since January 2005, the International Development Association (IDA), the World Bank arm that provides interest-free credits and grants to the worlds poorest countries, has provided a total of US$308 million for Haiti. Additionally, trust funds administered by the World Bank have given more than US$55 million since 2003. ....................................................................................
