This was part of the monthly test of the Hamilton County, Ohio outdoor sirens on November 5, 2008.

The siren in this video is a dual-tone, double-head model manufactured by the Sterling Siren Fire Alarm (from the 1960s). The so-called "growl test" is sounded here.

  • In the 80's when I lived in Lexington,MS....they had a siren just like this to alert the VFD members of a fire...in addition to the pagers...I lived three miles out in the country at t he time, and it would wake you up way out there late at night...

  • @hookecho80 Dumb luck in my case.

    Would be a fun experiment to measure how much louder it would it be if th.end grills and stator covers weremoved.

    Also fun to hear what it sounded like at 1000 or 2000 feet where the 16-port stator's higher frequency is more attenuated.
