I work at a law firm with a girl who just graduated law school with almost $200,000 in student loans. I think I'll skip out on law school. My dad is a lawyer and he's just miserable all of the time. Too much stress. You can't leave work at work. :( I see lawyers all the time and they just look miserable.

people do not know how bad law school is. Its not something where u can work hard and push your way through and finish on top like in undergrad. Its a poltical system on how to get chummy with the teachers so they can get u their grades u want, and get on your law reviews. And then it does not end there, u have to get more ass kissing to get law firm job, all to work 90 hrs for 60 k. the only reason im staying is because i want to finish and take the bar. its crap

@BlackLabelSlushie - If you don't bill enough, you are out. If you want to be a star, you gotta bill like crazy, which translates to 10-12 hour workdays at minimum plus weekends. Then you might get a bonus at Christmas after killing yourself all year. Not for me, thanks.

@bellbm55 - Heck, any white collar job will do, as long as you work at it. My buddies who went to the Big 5 firms after college are not doing any worse than me, and they don't have the stupid debt... and they all bought houses before me because they were earning money before me.

@redskins2k - My buddy landed a big law firm job paying big bucks... then he did the math and figured out he was making $35/hr. If you don't make partner in 7 years, you are done. They dump you for a cheaper new associate.

@legalman1980 - I know the feeling well. I didn't take out the full ride so I didn't have the big debt, but it was still enough to suck. I suffered for 3 years as a lawyer, being miserable and hating life every waking moment. Then I decided to do what I love and I don't regret it one bit not being a lawyer.

The only good thing about being a lawyer is that people do tend to give you some space because they don't want to mess with you too much because they don't want to fight a lawyer.

@anh757 - Stats bear it out. 50% of licensed lawyers in CA don't practice. The 50% of lawyers who are in active practice, half are drinking or using drugs. That's why there is mandatory substance abuse training required by the State Bar for us.

@bellbm55 60 hr a week? Try 80. Routinely. I fucking hate it. I think my area (trade law) is known even in the law world as having almost unbearable hours.
