Baja SAE consists of three regional competitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Engineering students from around the world are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain and sometimes even water.

  • @Goingone2 Keep it simple. CVT to single straight cut (or helical) reduction gearbox to chain drive. If you dont want to do a gearbox, you could reduce with belt drive (GOODYEAR Eagle Pd). Some people even use a single reduction step - CVT to triple row chain drive. Make sure you use a CVT.

  • @jlbatey21 I'm trying to design our own gearbox this year. did you guys explore the option of using a dog-box gearbox? do you know of any good research material that would help us design our own gearbox? we're way in over our heads and we could use all the help we can get.

  • @Goingone2

It is not a differential. It is a custom 2-speed planteary shift-on-the-fly gearbox w/ a single row chain drive as the final reduction.

Live axle, with a well placed sway bar and suspension links allows the vehicle to pick the inside rear tire up during heavy maneuvering.

  • You show a picture of your differential at 1:17 can you explain how it is driven?
