High tension in the Light Town
380kV of power is transported through high tension cables spanning electriciy pylons which run from power stations to sub-stations. From those sub-stations electricity of a lower voltage is passed on through mostly underground cables to factories, offices, houses, streets and city squares. Electricity also supplies the hundreds of thousands of light bulbs that make Eindhoven the 'Light town'. The process - the continuous supply of electrical energy - is invisible. By illuminating sections of the masts in increasing and decreasing brightness, the effect is given of them charging up and subsequently releasing their energy; by repeating this effect we project the image of electricity being transported. High tension cables and pylons run alongside and cross over motorways and main roads at various locations around Eindhoven; by illuminating these areas of the high tension infrastructure in a special; way, the effect is given that these are somehow 'city gates' which mark the borders of the Light Town
Hoogspannend in de Lichtstad!

Via kabels, gespannen tussen hoogspanningsmasten, wordt stroom (380kV) van energiecentrales naar verdeelstations getransporteerd. Vanaf deze stations wordt de elektriciteit met een lager voltage door leidingen, vaak ondergronds, geleid naar fabrieken, kantoren, woningen, straten en pleinen. Stroom is ook de voeding voor alle lampen die Eindhoven tot lichtstad maakt.
Het proces - de continue stroom van elektrische energie - is niet zichtbaar. Door delen van de masten achtereenvolgens feller te verlichten of zwakker aan te stralen ontstaat de suggestie dat deze delen respectievelijk opladen en ontladen; door dit effect te herhalen verbeelden wij het transport van elektriciteit. Op diverse locaties rond Eindhoven lopen de hoogspanningskabels langs en over snelwegen of hoofdwegen; door op deze plaatsen de hoogspanningsinfrastructuur op een bijzondere wijze in het licht te zetten worden deze ervaren als stadspoorten die de grens van de lichtstad markeren.
