it was a cooperation for the chassis. the engine you talk about is the VR6 not the diesel. also it is VW who is lending the engine to porsche but porsche put their own head on the vr6 and fined tune it for the cayenne.
And yes the touareg and the cayenne are basically the sme thing.

The Touareg's engine was actually developed by Porsche, but as it was a Diesel they sold it to VW. It is basically a Porsche in VW clothing!! I love evrything about it; the design, interior, the spaciousness of it.. EVERYTHING. This is my dream car.. worth £56,000.. hopefully one day I'll be driving it :)

but still a great car that makes me feel happy and great value for the money.its just that the x5 is more of a road car than off road than a touareg.
