I'm surprised Phoebe didn't say something about "never turning into a plant at her old school." LOL.

@alomomola553 They have to make their own sugar.

@calabiyauasaurus Perfectly said.
To alomomola553, on top of tonicity and osmotic pressure, you must always remember what kind of carbohydrate (sugar) you're talking about. Sucrose (table sugar) is much different than glucose (made in the plant), which is much different than when it converts the glucose to starch, different from fructose, galactose, lactose, maltose, glycogen, cellulose, etc. It all depends on what enzymes you have. That's we we can digest starch but not cellulose (wood).
If sugar is food for plants, wouldn't sugar water be better for plants then regular water?

@alomomola553 An excellent question! Sugar water will actually harm the plant. In technical terms, it lowers the water potential of the soil water by lowering the osmotic potential. Water flows from higher to lower water potential. The water potential in the plant must be lower than the soil water potential in order for water to flow from the soil into the plant. Plant roots are not adapted to absorb sugar. Plants make all the sugars they require via photosynthesis.
