The call came out around dawn on 8-10-10 for a reported apartment building fire with people jumping from the 2nd story in the area of 38th and Shelby. First arriving companies confirmed heavy smoke showing and an initial attack line was advanced into the building. EMS and police immediately started tending to multiple ...victims as additional resources were requested from Portage, Lake Station, and New Chicago. It took crews just over an hour to bring the fire under control. The cause is currently under investigation.
Was there a reason they didn't go in after this one?? Maybe a large rescue effort initially? Seems like it would have been advantageous to go after it in the attic to begin with...seems like that would have made a big difference. Don't wanna play Monday morning quarterback, just wondering. Probably some extenuating circumstances that the video didn't show.

who is the chuckle head on the ladder truck??? you are supposed to aim at the fire, not the windows on the other side of the building...

Regarding the renters insurance comment, every renter should have it. As an insurance agent, I hear lots of excuses why to 'not' carry it, like "we're careful" and 'we don't own much". Well, what if your neighbor above you isn't careful and starts a fire damaging your apartment? Renters insurance will cover what you do have, plus hotel and other living expenses while you are unable to live in your damaged apartment. For $10 to $25/month, there's no excuse to not have it.

I lived in these buildings for about a year till a micro burst took the roof off of it and it was condemed... I lived in the one across fron the one on fire. That building was for the elderly their are only a few younger ppl living there. This was destined to happen these buildings were not upto date and full of mold! I am glad my elderly friend moved out the day before or she would have lost everything!
