On The First Day On January,
Eighteen Ninety-Two,
They Opened Ellis Island And They Let
The People Through.
And The First To Cross The Treshold
Of That Isle Of Hope And Tears,
Was Annie Moore From Ireland
Who Was All Of Fifteen Years.

[Chorus:]
Isle Of Hope, Isle Of Tears,
Isle Of Freedom, Isle Of Fears,
But It's Not The Isle You Left Behind.
That Isle Of Hunger, Isle Of Pain,
Isle You'll Never See Again
But The Isle Of Home Is Always On Your Mind.

In A Little Bag She Carried
All Her Past And History,
And Her Dreams For The Future
In The Land Of Liberty.
And Courage Is The Passport
When Your Old World Disappears
But There's No Future In The Past
When You're Fifteen Years

[Chorus]

When They Closed Down Ellis Island
In Nineteen Fourty-Three,
Seventeen Million People
Had Come There For Sanctuary.
And In Springtime When I Came Here
And I Stepped Onto It's Piers,
I Thought Of How It Must Have Been
When You're Fifteen Years.

[Chorus]

  • A beautiful, timeless song! Anyone who says America is stupid, and it's people are uneducated or whatever, needs to look back in history and realize how many people came here from different countries to get a new start in life! So many foreign people appreciate the opportunities America has given them, and we can't let that die!

  • we were listening to irish music like this but no voices:

Me: I really like this music

Friend: You like this music whats wrong with you!!!!?????

  • aw was in dublin, in a bar and the guy singin started talking about annie moore, oh my gosh i got sooo excited, he seemed shocked that i knew the song... i welled up listening to it, and sung my heart out! then he sang spanish lady for me... i woke up with no voice! as good as he was, and as much as i loved it, i prefer and always will, celtic woman i wish it was them i heard live!

  • @mermaidsirena76 too late :(

  • I've been singing this song from memory since I saw them perform it once at the last Celtic Woman concert I was able to go to (two years ago about). I listened to it now and can't believe I was able to remember it exactly from hearing it only once. I'm buying this song right away, it's my favorite one by far. :)

  • I am Italian, not Irish, but I am going to move to the US in two weeks.. and this song gives me very deep feelings.. sadness for what I am going to leave, hope for what I am going to get, and I can distinctly see myself walking the path that many of my fellow countrymen walked in the last century.. away from home, towards opportunity..

  • the beginning of this song reminds me of a foggy harbour, with strong men lifting boxes onto boats. please don't ask me why :)

  • @94Mochi

that is the best comment i have ever heard!

    In total agreement

  • I'm not even Irish and this song still makes me cry.

  • Beautiful :')
