Just a quick and dirty comparison between the two flashes. The 580 ex II has a higher GN (flash output) then the YN 460 II, however this video was uploaded to see how the YN 460II complements the flash as a kicker/rim light.

$46 is a little pricy for a kicker flash, but meh you only need one.

  • Thanks for the comparison, Can you tell me if you have tried Nissin, sigma and metz flashes? how are they compared to canon 580 ex II.

  • @syedahmedrazaabidi1 NIssin and Metz flashes are on par with the canon speedlites, however since their price range is almost close to the 580ex line, i would pay the extra to have a dedicated canon flash. The 460 II that i have in this video actually crapped out on me due to the young-nuo company using inferior capacitors. Young-nuo is still 2-3 years behind the quality components that canon and nikon use.

  • Sorry I ment s2

  • @ThePhotographybysimo s2 will not work either with a strobe. s1 fires when it sees a handheld speedlite fire while s2 ignores the preflash then fires. s1 and s2 still operate on both radio frequency triggering based on the speedlites frequency. It's very misleading in the YN manual by "optical" triggering.

  • you need to put it in s1 mode for slave hope this helps

  • @ThePhotographybysimo you are incorrect. s1 mode fires only when there is a radio frequency that is triggered at the same time. If you have an AC powered strobe, press the test button and look at the yn 460II. It will NOT fire. The only time it will fire is if there is another flash firing based on the frequency of the flash. strobes apparently don't require that frequency to fire. thus s1 will not work with strobes unless they are triggered by a radio frequency or on-camera flash.

  • So, can you put the 580EX ii on master and slave the YN 460 II?

  • i expected graphic cards

  • @SenoreQueso really depends on your needs. ETTL is very very useful when shooting and my first recommendation would be to get a canon flash, where it be a 430ex, 580ex, or the mark II versions. If you want to go bare bones with the strobist movement, manual flashes can be very worthwhile but you will have to take several shots to get the right exposure. again, i'd really recommend that you get a ettl flash first then invest in the yn 460 which is a STRICTLY MANUAL speedlite.

  • What else would you recommend for the price range? I'm 16, so money is obviously a concern. Looking to build a decent Strobist kit. I was going to order one of these, try it out for a bit, and if it met my standards (which are only founded on speculation for how something like this should work), I was going to order 2 more and a set of the YongNuo radio triggers. What do you think?

And thanks for the video. Videos like these help me make decisions.
