I was learning to use a lathe and thought I'd make something so this is a short video of an axial jet engine I have made. Its not very efficent and only runs on gas.

  • was that self sustaining?

    looking at the design i doubt it but would love to be proved wrong, if i can see a video of it running on it's own for more than a minute i'd believe it.

    the reason i doubt it (and hope that doesn't offend) is that your tip clearance is huge and the losses will be huge vus no selfsustain.

    like i say, i'd love to be proved wrong

  • it runs, then slowly starts to run down so therefore its not self sustaining unfortunatly.

    it is because of the ridiculous clearenses as u say but thats the best i could do with the method i used. however i'm thinking of encorporating stators aswell, it'll probably be a new build and complicated just need find time to do it.

  • @slartibartfast69 You are right, this will never ever run, even three stages of compression is no where near enough.

  • im getting into this stuff and wondering at 0:36 the shaft inbetween the sets of blades what is that? i saw in a video a man mad a completly homemade one and that peice was accually a bike hub from a bike rim is that as this is?

  • Good job but you would need high temperature alloys as with available RC jet engines and also more sophisticated tooling. In addition to the huge spacing, I also heard that proper balancing of blades is very critical and need a lot of metal experience to be done properly.

  • Your right,also if i may add would be to experiment with different spacing of the rotors+ Stators,also the stators must be set  at certain angles to relation to the Deflection angle and angle of attack of the rotor blades and incoming air, also if it is a high press compressor the spacing would need to come closer to the stator of course depending on the amount of stages. I think the "Ole Boys" on to somthing there if he just give up right?. :-)

  • This size of gas turbine if done correctly would give at least 40lbs of thrust.

    And even at idle for sure it wouldn't stay on that desk as you haven't strapped it to anything.

    You were able to meet a sustained operation which is completely impossible as w/n 15 sec of operation you would have a super heated ball bearings that is enough to stop the operation as you haven't got any oil lines to lubricate and cool down your bearings.

    If this video is true science is completely false.

  • Any updates? I just did my first spool up today on a similar design. It lights off but won't sustain either. It tries....kinda. What kind of blade angles are you using? How about diffuser to turbine nozzle area?

  • I'm sorry; I would REALLY love it if this were real, but I have to call hoax - I do not believe that any combustible fuel was involved.

    If it were actually have had combustion setting on the desk like that, it would burn everything behind it, and there would have been obvious flames and fire.

    Also; there was no apparent fuel source, fuel line, or ignition method. Had ANY FUEL been ignited, it would have made a very different sound; see youtube video ofJVCddTpYM
