The Fountain is about the realization that you are going to die and the various ways humans have struggled with that concept. Conceptions about death are conveyed through Jackman's three characters. We witness him progress through degrees of consciousness finally reaching enlightenment when he reaches Xibalba; the physical manifestation of death. There is also a comparison in the movie with Nietzschean ideas of death. He writes of the reason of our cheerfulness is the embrace of death.
