  • I think you are right to say that the hips should turn freely in the back-swing; but we should retain the position of the right thigh, in the back-swing. Hogan himself did not do that, which caused his weight to turn towards his left foot; but as a naturally left sided player he could make it work from there

  • @DASH1ful Thanks for the comment! Both legs should and actually do extend slightly to allow the hips to turn and this is anatomically necessary; I have several videos explaining this starting with "downswing weightshift; shawn clement", "2008 golf swing review; shawn clement", "create serious speed; shawn clement" and "horse shoes and lassos; shawn clement"; Hogan, Moe, Sam Snead, Jack in his Prime, Kenny Perry and many more do this very well and the benefits greatly outweigh the alternative.

  • You're backswing looks very vertical to me. I dont know much, but it would make sense to say that it causes you to hit on the inside of the ball as you swing from in to out, which caused you to draw ball. do you hook alot?

  • @momo671

Not at all! I enjoy hitting all shots from fades to draws both high and low and from both sides of the ball; remember Nicklaus? See "golf pro lesson coordinating arm motion with body turn" and "golf pro lesson perpetual motion drill" for a deeper understanding of the arms...Thanks for the comment! Shawn

  • I am a left handed golfer and have this exact problem. No matter what I try I can't maintain my tush line. At best I come off the line a couple inches. I can do it in slow motion but as soon as my swing speeds up I collapse my left hip/leg towards the ball. Have tried wall drill, etc. Any other suggestions?

  • @r3dgraphix,

Try the feet together drill (Golf pro lesson one leg drill and feet together update") and then move into hitting some shots flat footed.

  • Shawn,

I read also in Hogan's Fundamentals about his posture......he wanted you at a semi sitting position.....do you agree with that or disagree.....

  • who is Eddie?

  • palmer and bubba watson turn their hips in the backswing and tiger, rory, and hogan dont.... theres several ways for power duh,,, btw tiger, rory and hogan all have head drops so quit raggan on that.

  • wow you guys need to pay attention... im talking to those who are talking about the head drop...first off im a scratch handicap and im 18 years old playing college golf so listen up... there are two ways to hit the ball with power... turning the hips and turning the hips violently, tiger, rory, ben hogan, and several other golfers have a head drop because they are loading the hips in the downswing... Mr. Clement you are great teaching! i have watched you videos... but guys if you look at palmer,

  • Thanks for the video. I notice a huge loss of power when I try to restrict my hip turn, Ala the X-factor. I am talking 50 yards on drives less, and 30 yards on a 5 iron. I tend to get lazy on my hip turn on the backswing and it causes plenty of mishits. For me I need to make a mental note to get a hip turn on my backswing or I hit weak slices because my arms have to come over the top to get back to the ball. I need to download this video and bring it with me to the driving range.

  • @clemshaw I think we will have to agree to differ. In my video on yt, The Reverse Hit, I manage to retain the position of my right thigh whilst turning my hip freely. This makes it easier to turn onto the front of the right foot in the down-swing, which is essential. Tiger Woods certainly has always retained the position of the right thigh in the back-swing as most modern players now do.
