Sam is incredible. He lives here in British Columbia, Canada. I saw him in ~1974 playing here in Victoria at a small church - Cream tunes on his Rickenbacker. Sam is humble - this man jammed with Hendrix - he's the last to mention that truth. Genuine nice guy and what a great player.

How high do you have to raise the action on your guitar to where you can play with a slide and normaly?

Sam plays with medium action but uses heavier strings (.012 or .013) so he doesn't need to press on the string as hard for the slide to ring cleanly. Also, the glass slide doesn't "clank" against the frets as much as metal so it's a better choice for mixing slide with fretted notes.
