Here is a short 16mm film I made back in 1966. It's your typical home movie with one exception: it was filmed in letterbox format! I had recently purchased a "Vistascope" anamorphic lens which attached over the normal lens & compressed the image when shooting, and when placed over the projector lens, decompressed the image to twice it's width. The same principal is used today. I'm sure few home movies were shot that way.
I transferred the film to tape over 25 years ago and leaves a little to be desired, but you'll get the idea. It's a short look at Asbury Park in the years gone by.
Filmed: August 1966

  • Was that the monte carlo pool?

    Thank-you 4 sharing...great

  • I don't recall after all these years but an earlier poster says it is.

  • i'm from red bank new jersey & some of my best memories are going to the palace with my buddies & hanging out at the boardwalk and tilley starring at us at night with his magnificent grin!!! they have to bring it all back man!!!!!!!

  • Everyone seems to have good memories of Asbury Park back then. I only went there a few times but remember the smell of hot dogs cooking and "surf music" playing. Afterall, it was the 60s.

  • Kerry-Have you seen Asbury Park recently. They are trying to clean up the area. There are some beautiful homes but it is not like it was 40 yrs ago.

This is just another great video. What is really cool is that you have captured America over the last five decades. I always look forward to anything new that you post.

  • Thanks for the comment. I appreciate it. And more movies/videos on the way!

  • i have been looking for the movie that played on PBS a few years back about Asbury Park. i think it was made by the Asbury Park Garden club. does any know how to get a copy of this movie???

  • what happened to it. i know they're building it up but still. WTF?

  • Thanks. We were just there today. Such a wonderful place. Thanks for the history.

After all though, it's really the beach we were/are after. Isn't it?

  • Asbury Park was dreamland for me growing up. Thank you for shooting the film and sharing it.

  • Great memories for you! Is that Roy Bittan on the piano?

  • Really brings me back! I was brought up in Wanamassa but left in 1965 for Miami (I was 10, it wasn't up to me!). I didn't return for another 40 years. We hit the boardwalk on a hot July afternoon in 2005...there wasn't a soul on the boardwalk or beach...how depressing! I, too, have home movies that my father shot in the early 60's that prove what a vibrant place Asbury was! Thanks for posting this video!

  • Asbury Park before they went bulldozer happy.

  • Very touching. 5 stars. Thanks for sharing.
