Fritz Schwegler

He lives in Breech near Göppingen in germany . He was born in 1935. He is versatile and very unique artist. He was a professor in Kunst Akademie Dusseldorf. From his class, the artists appear in great numbers. Thomas Schütte, Thomas Demand、 Katharina Fritsch, Martin Honert, Thomas Huber, Jan Schüler, etc.....




He came back to the village where he was born after retirement. He restores the old water tower or warehouse in his village. And he changes these small buildings to the exhibit space only for his works. These are dotted in the village. Without the information and of course invitation from him, no one can see. I think it will be possible to go around on foot, but he took me by car. In each place, he made a secret small storage. And he keeps some bottle of liquor that he made himself. His quantity of drinking decreased these days, I think. But I cannot forget my first visit. He treated me a glass of his liquor at each place. These small buildings that dotted in his village are his work itself. The inside is his world itself. His village is the highlight of his world. In this meaning, it must be impossible to understand without visiting his village, without looking these worlds.

He made a lot of works. Drawings, paintings, sculptures, books, many divergences. I heard he himself traveled around the world as a performer in his young. His world is finishing now in his village. He is building his new studio now, very big and beautiful. I am looking forward to visit on the next time.

He refused any kind of catalogue so far. He just made his books and printing matters. The printed matter that he made is just a part of his work. These are a big meaning for him. I visited him in Breech in 2007 and discussed to make his small exhibition in weissraum. This exhibition was just only his printed matter. But, from a young to a old people it was really popular. They enjoyed in his world.




Fritz made 99 these wood boxes with his works. These are lithographs. We had his exhibition include drawings and printed matter three times last year. Maybe it is the last show of this series. I am very glad to show his works in weissraum. Especially it is huge pleasure to make last show with Chris & takaya.
