With the resent nuclear catastrophe in Japan, there has been an increase in public concern over radiation exposure. This is an issue that Dr. Mitchel Goldman studied at length while studying internal medicine at UCSD. In 1981, he published a paper detailing his findings. Since then, he says, not much has changed concerning the realities of radiation exposure. He recently discussed the topic of radiation on San Diego's Fox 5 News, on their "Your Health" segment, on which he is a frequent guest.
"It's very responsible that the media is being so on-top of the situation to alert the public, but we really have to put it in perspective," Dr. Goldman said. At the height of the Cold War in the 50s and 60s, Americans were exposed to millions of times more radiation than Chernobyl, Three Mile Island, or what is currently being released in Japan.
If you are exposed to radiation, there is not a lot you can do. If you are exposed to radioactive material, you should wash with soap and water. If you are exposed to radioactive iodine in the air, you must take iodine pills as long as the radioactive iodine is still present - but should not take iodine pills as a preventative measure. Other radioactive materials, such as plutonium and strontium, bind to minerals in the soil, so there is little risk of water supplies becoming contaminated.
With much speculation and misinformation circulating, due to recent events in Japan, Dr. Goldman stresses the need to not worry overmuch about radiation exposure and to keep things in perspective. "The amount of radiation being released in Japan is real," he says ,"but it's far less than could be possibly toxic to anyone and much less than we, in the United States, were exposed to in the 50s and 60s."
