Oliver Sacks recently wrote a book about music and the brain. I haven't read it yet, but I have read excerpts and reviews.

music=auditory reward pathway vestige/superstimulus. Very useful tool to invoke emotion. However I disapprove of making it into a full time career. And it is very easy for some people to become addicted and perhaps blow out their ears in the process.
