... Clay is not about good lateral movement, it's about a adapting to a completely different surface which is a talent in itself not directly related to tennis skills or athletic ability - again Andre's advantage was in his ability to control points from the middle and move less than his opponent.

Pete was talking about his own experience of Andre and how he felt he was able to beat him - a compliment in itself, and much more interesting than hearing another "wow man, Andre was so great...". Andre was not superior in lateral movement, but in controlling a point from the middle of the court and making his opponent move laterally. Pete was a better athlete and better mover in all respects - probably second or third ever only to Federer and Nadal.
